Indonesia is an archipelagic continent with over 81,000 km of coastline, with territorial waters comprising 65% of the Coral Triangle marine biodiversity hotspot. In this context, it is clear that Indonesia should seek to play a strategic role in the development of a healthy and sustainable seaweed industry. Indonesia is now the largest seaweed producer in the world, with great potential for the development of seaweed culture paradigms which produce healthful natural products while respecting the environment.
